"Here, take this pack of condoms and use it. Don't get drunk and bring back unwanted diseases to me."
Would your spouse or girlfriend say that before you embark on yet another overseas business trip? Does that means she doesn't trust you? Or its just a show of affection and she cares about you? Are there any underlying messages or hints of contempt?
That was the topic of discussion amongst the lads last night. Living together with people of such diverse backgrounds and cultures for 3 months, sure brings up plenty of controversial view points worthy of analysis. Sometimes, it almost felt like living in a world village.
The opening sentence was what X's wife said to him before he came to Canada and we were going like "Wow! Your other half is so understanding...." Whileall most men would marvel him for having such a wonderful and understanding wife. I thought otherwise....
As an Asian and above all, Singaporean, my upbringing was much more conservative. My initial thoughts was that his wife had lost the trust between them and had to resort to such methods to protect herself and their family. How can there be love when there is no trust? IMHO, a relationship is based on 2 elements, Trust and Communication. Both factors work hand in hand and can do no good if one is missing from the another. If there's no trust, the relationship is doomed for failure...
My Arab friends provided a rather harsh viewpoint. For their spouse to even suggest the above mentioned, is a show of disrespect and their other half will be subjected to a tirade of disdain. Men go out to work, in order to bring home the bread. Not go out to fool around, in order to bring home plagues.
X together with his European counterpart rallied together and opined against our views. They rationalised that this practise is common in Euro countries. It is not about your other half not being able to trust you or anything of sorts. It is about the concern the ladies have for their other half, should their other half gets too tipsy and makes a mistake. The least the guys can do is not bring any diseases home. However, this does not meant that all guys should just go out and get laid. This is after all a safety precaution.
What about you? Do you have any thoughts to share about this subject?

Wah! Actually it's not that surprising that the Euro fellas are like that. I mean perhaps what we see in movies IS INDEED the norm despite what they say.
Anyway did u guys bring up this point to the Euro guys:
"Does it also mean that your wives might 'get tipsy and get laid too?'
So in Europe do the men also give their wives a condom and say "honey make sure you use it while I am away cos I don't wanna come back to any diseases. I'm saying this cos I really care about your well being"
What goes around comes around. Personally I don't envy them. I think that's their wives' way of telling them they are going to have a fun time with the other ladies and the blokes at the bar while you are away. *wink*
But hey it's a personal choice I guess (aside from the religious and moral undertones). I wouldn't want my wife to be screwing around (despite using a condom) while I am away. So why should I be allowed to screw around (despite using a condom)?
One last thing. If the bloke is tipsy enough to make a "mistake", what makes you think he will be level headed enough to use a condom?
LOL!
A valid point Doc,
I'll use your example and see what the guys say, get back to you soon.
haha, yes, a valid point abt the wives "making mistakes" instead when they're drunk. I'll love to hear the response too!
What? You guys didn't bring it up?
Well I guess you guys must have been tipsy anyway! haha!
here's another one.....
If you can be so stoned out as to make mistakes, has anyone ever woken up to find themselves with a transvestite or gay guy and horrors of horrors a used condom as evidence of the previous night's activities?!!!
LOL!
PS: All this talk about making mistakes due to alcohol....I always say BS! Why? If you really want to prevent mistakes, you CAN! Just don't drink. And also if people never go to private rooms or private places no "mistake" would hapen. There is always that "intent/possibility" lurking somewhere. And people just tempt fate.
I think the underlying meaning of the Euro wife could be that, 'I know what you are doing, it doesn't matter as long as you still provide for the family or love me.'
Correct me if I'm wrong - Sex to most men is just a physical thing, mostly it is without emotional attachment.
Err, I think you're referring to ma***rb*tion?
Erh.. Just what the heck is ma***rb*tion?
